Afrikaanse Taalmonument (Afrikaans Language Monument), Paarl
The shape in the middle of the stairs represents the contribution of Indonesian/Malay dialects to Afrikaans. The spire tall but incomplete spire represents the rapid and - as seen by the movers and shakers in the 1960s - ineluctable growth of the language. Finally the smaller spire, which rises out of a pool, represents South Africa; U-shaped in section, it is open to the north to represent dialogue with the rest of Africa.
